Bug farms...

We have a pine tree that fell last summer. My oldest recently discovered that termites (or ter-na-mites as little sis call them) had taken up residents in it. Being the adventurous boy that he is, he decided to "harvest" the termites so he could feed them to Socks, his pet dumbo rat. So...for the last week, we've had termites in the house...but he's taking good care of them making sure they have plenty of the stuff that termites like best...wood. I must admit, it's been a pretty cool observing them tunnel and do what termites do...
.
Which brings me to the newest bug farm...Crickets. For a whooping $2.75 Andrew bought 50 crickets at the local pet store to feed the rat. But...he found that they were a really cool new pet to have as well. So, with a large dill pickle jar in hand he make a cricket habitat. They seem to be happy, I'm sure that this is the best place they've been considering they are breed for critter food and live in a plastic cup. We're enjoying their chirpy happy sounds...makes me feel like I'm living in the country :~)

.
Andrew just gave his sister a couple (male & female) of her own to begin her own farm (this of course was in exchange for him borrow her DS game). Luckily I just happened to have another pickle jar :~)
