Surprise in the birdhouse...

My oldest found a surprise today! He found this little critter all cuddled up in our birdhouse on the big'ol oak tree in our front yard. You'll need to click on the picture to actually see the little pink nose and orange teeth (ick). We think this little critter might just be a flying squirrel! If you look close you'll see red and white yarn...we put tons of cut pieces of yarn in a pair of old crocs and nailed them to the tree so birds could use the yarn for nesting material (can you say redneck?).

Update...1/26/09
Andrew was poking around the birdhouse and this little face poked out...he/she definitely appears to be a flying squirrel. We'd love to know if it is a he or she and if this is a nest for little baby critters...maybe in time we'll find out!

October 2007 hubby saved a flying squirrel from Daisy our crazy dog. We named it "Stitch" and quickly fell in love with him/her. I nursed him/her back to health and it even went camping with us in order to maintain it's feeding schedule.

We desperately wanted to buy a cage and keep "Stitch"...but knew that the best place for "Stitch" was to be free. We released "Stitch" in that same birdhouse on that same magnificent oak...

We don't know what happened to "Stitch"...since flying squirrels are nocturnal the chances of us seeing him/her were slim...but today we wondered if this might be our beloved "Stitch" coming home to nest.
