In all my years of living in Mobile...and homeschooling, we've never attended an event at Fort Conde. In fact, it wasn't until about 3 years ago that I'd even been to the fort at all. I had put the date on my calendar weeks ago just in case I'd find myself adventurous. Luckily my friends were going as well and we decided to meet up and enjoy the fun together. One of my dear friends had for warned me that the Fort was expecting around 1000 public school children...yikes! Now, I am in no way a crowd person...but I am especially not a loud, rowdy, disrespectful, ill mannered, too pushy type of kid crowd person.
Imagine my surprise to find that today was tolerable and tons of fun. It felt like a small family reunion as I saw many of my homeschool friends whom which I don't see as often as I'd like because we travel in different circles, under different coverschools, etc.
We enjoyed the spinning wheel (the coolest!), archaeological dig table (very informative!), quill pen writing (messy & wet), quilt making (gluing material on paper), sword fighting (missed the show), candle making (the lady left me thinking she was to snappy with the kids), butter making (too hot), and the other three areas at this point were missed because I was hungry and feeling I'd had enough fun. We finished with a trip to the petting zoo, a huge hit with my youngest.
I asked my oldest what the best part of Fort Conde was and the answer was...drum roll please...PLAYING WITH SEAN! (his best buddy)...LOL That kid and his priorities...but, I guess in his defense, the best part of MY day was probably spent with friends as well. I am thankful for good friends and time spent enjoying our homeschool adventures and life together.
We finished the afternoon with a trip to McDoodles (that's McDonald's for those that don't know my lingo)...we were invaded by THREE school bus loads of high school ROTC students...we all agreed it could have been much worse. At least these kids were well dressed (no slouchy pants) and very polite and helpful. Those kids are welcome in my life any day...it gives me hope that all is not lost in the world...not yet anyway.
I'd love to post some photos, but I forgot my camera...how do I forget my camera?!?
Shame on you for forgetting your camera! That is just not acceptable for bloggers. :-) Sounds like the Fort was fun...one of those other Mobile places I miss.
