My sweet girl has had it on her mind that she wanted to make and deliver some kitty toys to the local animal shelter. She spent several nights making beaded string toys...I knew how much work she put into them and certainly did not want to squish her ambition, but I knew that the likelihood of them being used were probably zero.
So...when it was time to deliver said toys, I suggested that we drop by the local pet store and purchase some 50% off Christmas toys to deliver "with" her handmade ones so they'd have extras. She thought that was a fantastic idea (luckily). We found three huge stockings...one full of kitty toys and two full of doggie toys, enough to supply puppies and large dogs, yippie! She proudly toted the toys to the checkout and quickly announced her intentions to the cashier :~)
Once we arrived at the shelter I was a bit nervous as I was unsure of the type of person we might encounter as we delivered said toys...after all, my girl was doing such a special thing and this would feed her soul beautifully and for a lifetime. If the wrong person was there, then it might squish the moment (like the time she gave money to the Salvation Army bell ringer...long and irritating story).
My nervous heart quickly diminished as we encountered the most pleasant woman, Mrs. Diane. She reacted just like I had hoped...with gratitude! She talked with my sweet girl and acknowledged her as a person. I know that the best gifts are often given anonymously and without thanks...but I'm so thankful that my girl got to experience something a little different...her heart was full. She has said a couple of times how good she felt to give...awesome!
We finished the time with a field trip inside the shelter...playing with silly puppies, petting sweet kitties and talking to the dogs. The kids and I love critters...I'm hoping we can soon volunteer at a local rescue group as one of our community service projects.
